Legendary Coach Geno Auriemma on Caitlin Clark: ‘She’s Being Targeted’

Legendary University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma said WNBA rookie superstar Kaitlyn Clark is being “targeted” by opponents around the league.

Since rising to overnight fame in the WNBA, Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark has been brutally bullied by players around the league and commentators outside. Geno Auriemma said Clark is currently going through the “growing pains” of professional basketball and has been targeted.

While Auriemma believes certain stars face special bullying, he also acknowledged that Clarke faced unprecedented bullying that was likely born out of jealousy.

“I don’t remember when (Michael) Jordan came in the league and everybody was trying to beat him,” he said. “I don’t remember when (Larry) Bird and Magic (Johnson) came in the league and elevated the NBA. I don’t remember them being targeted and beaten just because of who they were and the attention they got. And I never heard any of them say, ‘Hey, why didn’t we do this when we were playing?’ Because nobody felt like it. It just wasn’t the time to do it.”

Auriemma added: “Just accept the fact that it’s time. I get it. It’s been a long time coming. Why blame the girl? It’s not her fault because you could swap places with her in a heartbeat. But you’re not there. You’re not her. So you’re complaining about what she’s going through?”

Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese, in a recent interview after the vicious foul on Clark, said people watch women’s basketball for her, hinting at some jealousy.

“I’m going to go down in history as someone who looks back 20 years from now and goes, ‘Yes, we’re not just watching women’s basketball for one person, we’re watching it for me, and I want people to understand that.'”

Rebecca Lobo, a retired WNBA star and current ESPN announcer, pu did not agree with the idea Other players are jealous of Caitlin Clark.

“That’s a false narrative,” Lobo said. “Are veterans being violent toward her? They are. But I haven’t seen anything too excessive or nasty until the Chennedy Carter attack. Chennedy has opened up arguments that were previously toothless.”

Sports analyst, Chiny Ogwumike, echoed Lobo’s assertion.

“These are elite basketball players, competitors who play every night before the spotlight even shines on the game. This is not hate. This is basketball,” Ogwumike said.
