Biden Uses D-Day 80th Anniversary Speech to Attack Putin, Defend Democracy

In a speech at a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings in Normandy, France, President Joe Biden condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “tyrant” and called on the world to “protect democracy in our time.”

The latter remark was reminiscent of comments made by Biden during his campaign in which he portrayed former President Donald Trump as an enemy of democracy. (Trump delivered a widely praised speech at the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings in 2019.) speech.

In his remarks on Russia, Biden praised the example of the Allies in World War II but did not mention that the Soviet Union was a key ally in the fight against the Axis powers, and said NATO was continuing that effort.

“Ukraine has been invaded by a tyrant hell-bent on control,” Biden warned. He said Ukrainians had inflicted a “staggering” toll on Russia, adding that “nearly a million people left Russia because they saw no future in it.”

“We will not go away, because if we do, it will not be the end. It will put the whole of Europe at risk,” he said. “It is completely unthinkable to bow down to a tyrant, to bow down to a dictator.”

“The world is living at a time when democracy is more endangered than at any time since the end of World War II,” Biden said.

He added: “Will we stand up against tyranny, evil and the crushing brutality of an iron fist? Will we stand up for freedom? Will we defend democracy? Will we unite? My answer is yes, and there is no other way to answer that than yes.”

He concluded: “Democracy is never guaranteed. Every generation must protect it, defend it and fight for it.”
