Caitlin Clark attacked; critics accuse of ‘white privilege’

Caitlin Clark was subjected to a hard foul by Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter during Saturday’s WNBA game, but the hit appeared to be for no apparent reason.

No one knows what sparked the attack, but “The View’s” Sunny Hostin has a theory.

“I think there’s beauty privilege, there’s white privilege, there’s tall privilege, and we have to acknowledge that,” Hostin began.

“So part of this issue is also about race, because if you think about people like the Britney Greiner of the world, you understand why she had to perform in Russia, because they wouldn’t pay her,” she concluded.

Lauren Chen agrees that beauty privilege and height privilege exist, but she doesn’t agree with Hostin’s comments about race.

“I think there’s an advantage to being tall, especially in the WNBA, but I don’t understand the obsession with automatically making it a race issue. From what I understand, Kaitlyn Clark seems like a clearly better player than other women players, regardless of race,” Chen said.

“I think it’s a lot easier to say, ‘Oh, you’re successful because you’re white,’ and then acknowledge, ‘Yes, you are actually better than other athletes,'” she added.

While Chen doesn’t agree with Hostin’s opinion, the “The View” co-host isn’t alone in her opinion.

Jemele Hill also said Caitlin Clark’s fame was “problematic” and about “race and sexuality”.

“We’d be very naive if we didn’t say that race and sexual orientation were factors in Kaitlyn’s popularity,” Hill told the Los Angeles Times. “A lot of people are happy about her success, including the players themselves, and it’s had a huge impact on the game. But it’s also a little problematic in that it says something about the value and marketability of the players we already have.”

“Well, maybe market value depends to some extent on performance,” Chen said. “Caitlin Clark seems like she just performs well, regardless of race or sexual orientation.”
