Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) responded to criticism that he’s not liberal enough by saying on CNN’s “Inside Politics” on Wednesday that he’s not a progressive.
“Right now, border security is a big issue in Pennsylvania and we all believe the border should be secure. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Democrats to want more border security,” Fetterman said.
“I wanted to ask you personally about your own journey, because, as the kids say, some progressives have criticized you for becoming a different senator than you suggested you would have become when you were a candidate for the Senate. How do you feel about that?”
Fetterman said, “Well, I’ve been very clear about that for years, so I’m not a progressive. I identify as just a regular Democrat. So it wasn’t really midday news. Now eight years ago, I was a progressive, but things have changed and I’ve been very clear about not dropping that label, but that label has left me.”
He added, “I think it’s much more important to focus on Donald Trump than it is on purity tests or any of those kinds of issues.”
