Former President Trump hinted at when he may name his 2024 vice presidential nominee during the second part of his interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday.

The campaign of a leading Republican candidate recently took the vice presidential selection process a step further, sending screening materials to several candidates.

According to sources who spoke with Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier, the vice presidential candidates who received the papers are North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and J.D. Vance, R-Ohio.

Other candidates reportedly on Trump’s shortlist include Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-New York) and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

“We’re going to announce who the winner is during the convention,” Trump said on “Hannity.” “I think that’s pretty normal. It’s going to be an interesting time during the convention.”

Trump added that some of his running mates “did a fantastic job of conveying the flaws and the benefits, the pros and cons of what we’re doing as a country and where we are as a country.”

“This is a very dangerous time for America. We have a political system that is more corrupt than we’ve ever seen before, and we’ve got to strengthen our elections, we’ve got to strengthen our borders, we’ve got to do something about our country, or we won’t have a country. And, you know, we talk about respect with other countries. They don’t respect our president right now,” he continued. “And if the president isn’t respected, then we’re in very serious danger.”

Insiders predict Trump’s running mate poses ‘existential threat’ to key areas of Biden’s base

The former president is scheduled to appear at a sentencing hearing in New York in mid-July, four days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Trump was convicted last week by a Manhattan jury in New York v. Trump of 34 counts of falsifying business records.

During the 2016 campaign, the 45th president announced on Twitter that he would choose Mike Pence, then the governor of Indiana, as his running mate.

Earlier this year, Pence declined to endorse the former vice presidential candidate, saying the decision was “not surprising.”
