First Case of Sexually Transmitted Ringworm Reported in U.S.

A New York City man has been infected with a sexually transmitted disease called ringworm, in what researchers say is the first confirmed case in the United States.

Health experts are warning healthcare workers about a highly contagious fungal skin infection, scientifically known as Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII (TMVII).

The infection is “a rare form of dermatophytosis affecting the genitals and genital area.” according to To report From Dr. Avrom S. Kaplan, Assistant Professor of Dermatology, New York University Grossman School of Medicine.

According to the report, male genital dermatophytosis, also known as ringworm, has been increasing in reported cases in India over the past decade, influenced by climate, hygiene and bathing habits.

“Healthcare providers should be aware that Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII is the latest in a series of serious skin infections that have now reached the United States,” Kaplan said. I have written Wednesday at University news release.

The infection comes from the same fungus that causes ringworm and athlete’s foot, but the rash may appear as lesions or eczema-like patches rather than small circles.

Kaplan said once infected, it can take “months” to recover, even with treatment.

The first confirmed case in the United States was a man in his 30s who developed ringworm on his penis, buttocks, hands and feet after returning home to New York City from traveling to the United Kingdom, Greece and California.

“This sexually transmitted disease, tinea pedis, is increasingly being diagnosed across Europe, with 13 cases reported in France in 2023, most of them occurring among gay men,” the news bulletin said.

The infected man said he had sexual relations with several men during his travels, but that the other men did not show similar skin problems.
