Monster truck topples utility poles, injuring several at Maine fairground

  • Last week, a monster cut power lines at the Topsham Fairgrounds in Maine, causing live wires to fall.
  • Police investigating officer Detective Sergeant Mark Gilliam said no criminal charges had been laid.
  • Two people were taken to hospital, including a spectator with a fractured spine and a woman with back pain.

After a frightening incident in Maine when a lobster-themed monster truck struck a power line, sending the live wire to the ground, police investigators have determined that criminal charges were not warranted and two people were taken to hospital.

A power pole broke and a transformer fell to the ground at the Topsham Fairgrounds on Saturday, injuring several people, including some who were trapped in portable toilets that were strung with electric wires, witnesses said.

Topsham Police Sergeant Mark Gilliam wrote in a report released Thursday that the driver was trapped in the cockpit by live electrical wires, and another wire was over the injured man, who was on the ground. The injured spectator suffered a fractured spine and was taken to a hospital, along with a woman who complained of back pain, Gilliam wrote. The other passenger was treated on his own.

Lobster-shaped monster truck knocks over utility pole in Maine

Driver Gregory Winchenbach, 51, of Jefferson, told police the truck had been bouncing off dirt ramps without incident before getting caught on a power line on the track Saturday afternoon, Gilliam reported. Winchenbach said he couldn’t see the wire from the cab of his custom-built monster truck.

This monster truck is shaped like a lobster and has been named “Crushstation”, a play on the word “crustacean”.
