Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr spoke with students on a conference call Friday with Vice President Harris about gun violence prevention, warning of the dangers of a second term for former President Trump.
“The vast majority of people in this country, regardless of party affiliation, support commonsense gun safety measures. 80% of Americans believe in universal background checks. We know there’s no way Donald Trump is going to try to pass legislation that would actually lead to that,” Carr said in remarks during an online conference call.
The NBA coach, whose father was shot and killed in the 1980s, drew attention for his impassioned response at a press conference following the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in which he urged lawmakers to move forward with background checks and other gun control measures.
Carr also wholeheartedly expressed his support for the Biden-Harris reelection bid, saying there was “no question” who he would vote for in the fall election “because of their leadership on gun violence prevention issues.”
The Biden administration is working on a series of events this week. National Gun Violence Awareness Daytakes place annually on the first Friday in June. Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff plans to attend a Washington Mystics game on Friday. Kickstart As part of “Wear Orange Weekend,” the White House will be lit up orange on Friday night to honor victims and survivors of gun violence.
After student leaders spoke on Friday’s call, Harris appeared on screen to tout her administration’s efforts on gun violence prevention — including creating the first White House office on the issue and working to close the so-called gun show loophole — and echoed Carr’s warning about Trump’s 2024 presidential bid.
“This November, as we continue the fight to end gun violence, the choice is clear: President Biden and I stood up to the NRA and the gun lobby, but President Donald Trump caved. He opposed reasonable gun safety reform and slashed funding for gun violence prevention. And a second term could be even worse,” the vice president said.
“If he wins in November, he will undoubtedly roll back bipartisan gun safety legislation, reopen the gun show loophole and veto any new gun safety legislation. Remember, when it comes to gun violence, Donald Trump has sent a clear message to the American people: ‘Get over it,'” she said.
Earlier this year, President Trump offered his “deepest condolences” to the victims of the shooting at Perry High School in Iowa, calling the incident “horrific,” before adding controversially, “But we must get past it and move forward.”
