Bill Maher calls out Caitlin Clark’s teammates not rushing to defend her: ‘Women are catty’

Following a controversial foul on WNBA superstar Kaitlyn Clark, “Real Time” host Bill Maher slammed Clark’s teammates, saying it was partly because “women are mean.”

Maher began by playing a video of a Chicago Sky guard shoving Clark to the ground. Chennedy CarterHowever, she was quickly alerted by nearby Indiana Fever teammates who did not rush to help her.

“If this were men, they’d be on the same team and defending each other,” Maher said Friday. “So the men play from two teams, but if someone sees who’s on their team, they defend that person. I’m saying there’s something bad about men too. We’re toxic. We’re dogs. Only women do this.”

“Women are mean,” Maher continued, “even to women on their own team.”

Maher quoted former NBA player Matt Barnes, who said, “My issue and question is, where are her teammates?…I saw some girls grinning when she got taken down and making a half-assed effort to lift her up…You guys are supposed to be a family…it’s your job to support her and to support each other.”

Author and journalist Abigail Schrier criticized the Indiana Fever coaches, specifically arguing that they should have told their players they had to protect Clark because she was a “superstar” who brought viewers to the WNBA, and threatened to bench her if they didn’t.

“There’s a racial component to this,” Maher said. “When white people are successful, it’s not necessarily racism.”

Reason magazine editor-in-chief Matt Welch gently countered, saying that “a black person hip-checking isn’t necessarily racist,” with which Ma agreed.

“It’s everything,” Maher said. “Women are mean, there’s a lot of lesbians in the league and she’s not, there’s race issues, there’s a lot going on.”
