JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo Customers Lose $456,000,000 in One Year To 'Dirty Little Secret Called Zelle': Senate Committee Chairman – The Daily Hodl

A U.S. Senate committee found that JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are failing to protect customers from fraud and abuse that costs them hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

“Zelle transfers are nearly instant and irreversible, and by the time consumers realize they’ve been scammed, it’s usually too late to do anything about it — at least according to Zelle and the banks that own, control and effectively operate Zelle…

“Zelle and the banks that own it are providing the appearance of trust that customers deserve. But the risks are real, and banks are failing to protect consumers the way they deserve.”

The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found that of the $456 million reportedly lost by customers to Zelle scams in 2022, $341 million was repaid. The committee said 13% of users of Zelle and other peer-to-peer payment platforms reported they realized it was a scam after sending money to someone.

And Zelle is now essentially free for most consumers.”
