Hennepin County's $400 million health insurance operation has a new CEO – Star Tribune

Michael Hargin, interim director of Hennepin Health, the county-run health insurance program, has been selected to be the organization’s next leader.

The Hennepin County Council voted unanimously June 4 to appoint Hargin as CEO of Minnesota’s only county-owned health plan for residents receiving Medicaid.

Herzing has been serving as interim leader since previous CEO Anne Kaniuszk Yoakam stepped down in December. As the agency’s permanent leader, Herzing will earn an annual salary of $200,000.

Hennepin Health has more than 35,000 members across three health insurance plans, according to its 2023 annual report. The organization’s budget is about $400 million.

“I am very excited to take on this role at Hennepin Health,” Herzing told the board. He noted the organization’s efforts to improve population health outcomes and address disparities in access to health care. “We have an incredible mission.”

Herzing has been with Hennepin County since 2005. Previously, she served as director of the Human Resources Services Department for nine years, overseeing the Access, Aging and Disability Services areas.
