Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) said Friday on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” that he believes President Joe Biden is “the only Democrat” who can beat former President Donald Trump in November’s presidential election.
A partial transcript follows:
Bill Maher: So let’s talk a little bit of politics here, because that’s your game. Pennsylvania is going to be one of the states that people are saying could probably be narrowed down to three states. Pennsylvania is definitely going to be one of them.
Fetterman: I’ve always said that Pennsylvania chooses the president. And there is no legitimate path for the president if he doesn’t win. And Trump was able to flip Pennsylvania, and it helped him win the first time, so I really believe he will actually win. But Joe Biden won in 2020 because he has such a strong connection to Pennsylvania. And I believe he will win this time too. But it’s going to be a very close race.
This is the same conversation I’ve been having with Pennsylvania, which is that it’s going to be very close, it’s going to be very competitive, etc. because Trump has strong ties in Pennsylvania. I’ve also said that I don’t believe this whole trial is going to be meaningful because people have already decided, “Hey, this is my candidate.”
We’ll never understand why someone would say, “Oh, I love it,” or “I want to do it for another four years.” But I believe Joe Biden is going to win Pennsylvania.
Maher: But he’s not yet the official Democratic nominee. Is he the best person for the Democrats to endorse?
FETERMAN: Joe Biden? Yeah, right. I think he’s the only American who actually beat Trump in an election. And, and I really, I believe he’s the only Democrat who can actually win. Let me just say this. Let me just say this. I know it might be provocative, but last time, we had a great governor who had $200 million, and we thought he was going to beat Trump. But Trump crushed him, and he finished third in his own state, Florida. And then again Trump…

FETERMAN: Well, well. Trump is pretty tough, and that’s what the Republican Party wants. And I can’t imagine why he’s still appealing. But Trump has a very…
And I believe Joe Biden has the ability to win, and we have a great, great team, but I think we’re in a very unique situation right now.
Maher: That’s surprising, but I’m going to go ahead and say, I’m sorry, I disagree with you, but, yeah, Joe Biden is probably going to be the winner and I’m going to vote for him.
