+/- change from the outgoing Congress in 2024. The total number of seats in Congress increased by 15.
The European Parliament has a total of 720 seats, all of which are up for election. 361 seats are needed to gain a majority, but it is unlikely that any political group will exceed this number. Each country has a set number of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), allocated roughly based on population. Citizens vote for national parties, which form largely European-wide blocs in Parliament.
The political groupings in Parliament are shown below the map, starting with the most left-leaning group. Pre-election opinion polls had predicted that the eurosceptic and anti-establishment parties in the ECR and ID groups would make big gains.

How elections work
This is the 10th election for the European Parliament, with all 720 seats up for grabs, and 361 needed to secure a majority. It is unlikely that any political group will achieve this goal.
Each country is allocated a number of MEPs based on the principle of diminishing returns, meaning that MEPs from larger countries represent more people than MEPs from smaller countries. The minimum number of MEPs any country can have is six, and the maximum is 96.
Some of the seat change figures should be treated with caution as the number of seats in the European Parliament has increased compared to the previous Parliament. France, Spain and the Netherlands gained two seats each. Poland, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Slovakia, Ireland, Slovenia and Latvia gained one seat each.
In each country, the number of MEPs elected from each party is proportional to the number of votes it receives.
Seats are allocated by national parties, but most MEPs join a series of cross-border political groups (there are currently seven, ranging from the right-wing ID group to the left-wing group) based on common causes, with each group needing a minimum of 23 MEPs from at least a quarter of EU countries.
About these results
Source: European Parliament. Change figures are based on the outgoing Parliament as of Friday, 7 June 2024. Countries are grouped by region according to the United Nations geographical system.
The results are marked with one of three annotations indicating how final the seat predictions for each country are.
-
estimateWhen voting has closed and there are estimates of results for a country based on polling agencies.
-
projectionwhere there is a presumption of the entire composition of the EU Parliament.
-
tentativeWhen a country’s official electoral authority has published initial voting results but the final outcome is unknown, and when the composition of the EU Parliament as a whole depends on such provisional national figures.
-
LastWhen the country’s official election authority publishes the complete results.
-
ConstructiveThe day when the composition of the European Parliament as a whole is formally confirmed.
Once the count has been completed in each member state, the allocation of seats to national and party groups will be final, but the seats allocated to party groups at national and EU level will remain provisional until all parties have decided which group (if any) they will belong to, which could take several days or weeks.
