Jasson Dominguez continues to perform well during an extended rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
He pitched nine innings in center field for the first time since returning from Tommy John surgery last year, before being replaced in the 10th.
Dominguez had four more hits, including a home run, before leaving the game.
Still, there’s no room for him to play regularly with the Yankees, especially with Soto scheduled to return as early as Monday against the Royals.
“He’s playing well and is in good shape,” head coach Aaron Boone said. “We know what he’s capable of. When it’s his time to play, we know what kind of impact he can have and we’re looking forward to it. We’re not going to rush it.”
And Boone made it clear that Dominguez likely won’t be called up unless he plays every day.
“When the time comes for him to get here, he’ll play,” Boone said. “I’m sure there’s a path forward.”
On Tuesday, the center fielder had his 20-day rehab assignment extended by 10 days and was moved from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
In his final eight games at Double-A, Dominguez went 12-for-30 with four home runs and a 1.219 OPS.
He hit six home runs in 19 minor league games this season.
“It’s different for everyone. Some guys, when they get an injury like this, they’re scared to do anything …” Somerset manager Raul Dominguez said. “That wasn’t the case with Jason. He was swinging naturally, hitting the ball hard and throwing to the bases like he normally would.”
Dominguez appeared in just eight games for the Yankees last season but performed well with four home runs and a .980 OPS.
