14-year-old strikes head while subway surfing in Queens

A 14-year-old boy was injured in a horrific subway surfing accident in Queens on Sunday, becoming the latest young victim of this dangerous trend.

According to the NYPD, the boy was on a southbound Platform 7 train when his head struck a beam as the train arrived at 111th Street station just before 4:30 p.m.

Police said the boy was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition.

7 Train
A 14-year-old boy was riding the No. 7 subway train when he hit his head on a beam as the train arrived at the 111th Street station.

Corona 7 station is at ground level but has an overhang across the tracks, leaving about a foot of space between the beams and the top of the train roof.

The boy’s injuries are the latest in a series of fatal accidents linked to dangerous stunts across the city.

Authorities say subway surfing is becoming increasingly common as teenagers try to emulate the daredevil behaviour that is widely shared on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

According to MTA statistics, there were 450 reports of people riding outside or on trains in the first six months of 2023. That’s a significant increase from the 262 reported during the same period in 2019.
