In an interview with GB News yesterday, Emily Thornberry, the shadow attorney general, implied she was not bothered by the prospect of the policy leading to parents taking their children out of private schools and putting them in the state sector instead, driving class sizes up.

In fact, public schools across the board are seeing fewer students in classrooms due to falling birth rates, meaning fewer young people are attending school.
\n
So, in fact, we will soon be in a situation where schools are being consolidated and closed due to falling numbers, as we are already seeing in places like London.

Our manifesto is a manifesto to save the NHS and social care.
\n
We want to boost GP numbers, we want to improve cancer survival rates, we want to end the access crisis in terms of people trying to reach their NHS dentists, we want to improve waiting lists for cancer treatment and mental health as well. And we have a bold plan to do that.
\n
We believe that that plan is going to require an additional £9bn per year and we’re going to get that money by taxing the big banks and billionaires.

Manifestos are all about what parties would do in government. But in the Conservative party, where the polls make it impossible for any sane Tory to believe for a moment they have any chance of staying in power after 4 July, the debate is focused on where they go in opposition, and Suella Braverman, the former home secretary, has kicked off a row by suggesting the party should work with Nigel Farage and his Reform UK. In an interview with the Times, “she said that the Tories should find a way to merge with Reform UK because ‘we shouldn’t be divided on this side of the political spectrum’,” Matt Dathan and Chris Smyth report in their story. Braverman told the paper:

We need to, in the future, to find some way to work together because there shouldn’t be big differences between us. I would welcome Nigel into the Conservative party. There’s not much difference really between him and many of the policies that we stand for.
\n
We are a broad church, we should be a welcoming party and an inclusive party and if someone is supportive of the party, that’s a precondition and they want Conservatives to get elected then they should be welcomed.

Nigel Farage wants to see the destruction of the Conservative party. He has said that very often. He’s not a Conservative.
\n
In fact, he’s a very European-style of politician. He’s not a very British politician at all. It’s a one-man band, this Reform outfit, and he fits much more, I think, the populist mould of politicians in other countries not too far away. He’s much more of a Poujadist than a Conservative. We are a broad church, but we’re not an Amazon warehouse.

If you want to contact me, please post a message below the line (BTL) or message me on X (Twitter). I can’t read all the messages BTL, but if you put “Andrew” in a message aimed at me, I am more likely to see it because I search for posts containing that word. If you want to flag something up urgently, it is best to use X; I’ll see something addressed to @AndrewSparrow very quickly. I find it very helpful when readers point out mistakes, even minor typos (no error is too small to correct). And I find your questions very interesting too. I can’t promise to reply to them all, but I will try to reply to as many as I can, either BTL or sometimes in the blog.

Important Events
Bridget Phillipson says her Labour peers were wrong to say that VAT on private school fees could lead to overcrowding in state schools.
Bridget PhillipsonThe shadow education secretary this morning sharply criticised a shadow cabinet colleague who argues that Labour’s plans to impose VAT on private school fees could lead to overcrowding in state schools.
in Interview with GB News yesterday, Emily ThornberryShadow Justice Secretary John F. Kennedy suggested he was not worried that the policy would encourage parents to move their children from private to state schools, leading to larger class sizes.
Thornberry said some public schools have space and could take on additional students. But, she continued,
And if we need to increase class sizes in the short term, we will increase class sizes.
this morning Phillipson Ms Thornberry said the idea was wrong because it failed to take into account the fact that a fall in the number of pupils enrolled in schools would not be a problem. She told Times Radio:
I’m scared [what Thornberry said] That was just wrong.
In fact, public schools across the board are seeing fewer students in classrooms due to falling birth rates, meaning fewer young people are attending school.
So, in fact, we will soon be in a situation where schools are being merged and closed due to falling numbers, as we are already seeing in places like London.
Pippa Crerar and Kiran Stacey We discuss what’s on the agenda this week in the latest Guardian Politics Weekly podcast, which you can listen to here.
Ministers ‘surprised and disappointed’ by Sunak’s D-Day blunder
Chris PhilpThe Police Minister said he was “shocked and disappointed” to learn that Chancellor Rishi Sunak had left the Normandy landings anniversary commemorations early, but insisted the Prime Minister would recover politically from the gaffe. Peter Walker I will report.
Conservative Party divided over whether to seek merger with Reform UK after election
Good morning. It’s Manifesto week. This morning the Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, will set out the Liberal Democrats’ policy. The Conservative Party, the Green Party in England and Wales and the Labour Party will follow later this week. Jessica Elgot The Liberal Democrat document will reportedly include plans for an overhaul of capital gains tax in a bid to raise £5 billion for the NHS.
On the Today show this morning, Daisy CooperThe Liberal Democrat deputy leader said:
