Vice President Harris said former President Trump wanted an advocate as his running mate after his campaign sent vetting materials to his running mate candidates.
“What we know is that Donald Trump wants a supporter. He doesn’t want a partner in government. He doesn’t want someone like Mike Pence. I think that’s clear,” Harris said. POLITICO“The litmus test is whether they are absolutely loyal to Trump above their country, their oath of office or, frankly, the American people.”
Harris was referring to former Vice President Mike Pence, who was a loyal No. 2 under Trump before breaking with him after he refused to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Pence has since run against Trump for the Republican nomination and has criticized his former boss on a range of issues.
Last week, Trump sent vetting materials to four Republican senators considered the front-runners to join his campaign: North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R-North Dakota), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Sen. Tim Scott (R-North Carolina) and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).
The Trump campaign also reportedly asked Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) and former Health and Human Services Secretary Ben Carson for information.
The former president has hinted at who is on his shortlist, but has also suggested he may wait until the Republican National Convention in mid-July to make an announcement.
