Firefighters battle Miami apartment blaze after finding person with gunshot wound inside

Miami firefighters were battling a blaze at an apartment building where a gunshot victim was found Monday morning, fire officials said.

According to the Miami Fire Department, the three-alarm blaze broke out at the Temple Court Apartments in downtown Miami and began in a common area on the roof, quickly spreading before multiple firefighters battled to extinguish the blaze.

The fire broke out on the third floor of the building, where one person was found with a gunshot wound and taken to hospital, fire officials said.

Details about the shooting victim’s condition were not immediately released.

Firefighters rescued several people trapped inside the burning building, including some on balconies, and about 50 people were evacuated from the scene, authorities said.

Mayor Francis Suarez said the fire was Miami’s first to reach a three-alarm alarm in the past 25 years.

“A fire of this size is extremely dangerous,” Suarez said, adding that more than 40 units from the Miami Fire Department were deployed to fight the blaze.

Fire officials said firefighters are continuing to fight the blaze from the outside of the building because it remains too dangerous to enter.

The two firefighters were taken to hospital in stable condition, and there was no immediate information on any injuries to residents as the situation remains ongoing.
