Fans gush over British announcer’s call of Mets’ win over Phillies

America wants more Darren Fletcher.

The TNT Sports announcer drew rave reviews for his call of the game-ending double play during Sunday’s Mets-Phillies game in London.

Fletcher, the football announcer, provided some truly exhilarating play-by-play commentary, with Drew Smith inviting a weak grounder from Nick Castellanos and catcher Luis Torres turning it into a double play.

“Smith wants to take his time against Castellanos, but who can blame him given the circumstances?” Fletcher said to explain the situation as Smith prepared to pitch with the bases loaded and one out. “I’m sure he’s feeling a lot of pressure. He’s not a closer by any stretch of the imagination. Edwin Diaz is coming in as the closer and he’s a guy that has a lot of pressure on his shoulder today…”

Then Fletcher worked his magic, tapping the ball in front of home plate for Castellanos.

“…then Castellanos’ bat explodes, sending the runner home and scoring a game-winning double play! What an ending! The bat shatters, the runner is out at home plate, the ball is smashed into the glove of first baseman Pete Alonso, and the New York Mets manage to withstand a Phillies rally and win Game 2 in London, 6-5.”

“17 hits, what drama, what a game, what a finish.”

Fans came together to praise X’s call.
