Hamas welcomed but did not accept a U.N. Security Council resolution introduced by the U.S. and passed on Monday that outlined a plan for a ceasefire and hostage exchange presented last month by President Joe Biden.
of Solution The resolution copied a proposal by Biden that Biden incorrectly described as an Israeli proposal but which the US later acknowledged was “substantially identical” to Hamas’ proposal. The resolution does not call for Hamas to disarm, but does demand that Israel withdraw all its troops from Gaza before all hostages are released, meaning Hamas could hold the hostages indefinitely.
Hamas welcomed the resolution but did not explicitly agree with it and said it looked forward to continued negotiations. The Times of Israel report:
“Hamas wishes to emphasize that it is ready to cooperate with mediators to enter into indirect negotiations on the implementation of these principles in line with the demands of our people and the resistance,” the Hamas statement said.
“We also declare our commitment to continuing our efforts and struggle for their national rights, most notably the defeat of the occupation, the establishment of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and the right of return and self-determination,” added the terror group, which openly calls for the destruction of Israel.
Essentially, Hamas pocketed the compromise resolution while sticking to its core demands that Israel end the war, keep its weapons and regain full control of the Gaza Strip.
Critics have slammed the Biden administration’s resolution, saying it seeks to elevate Hamas rather than destroy it.
“Today’s UN Security Council resolution is fatally flawed because it treats Hamas, first and foremost, as a legitimate actor. America’s position should always have been that Hamas is a brutal terrorist group that must be destroyed, and that states that support Hamas must be held accountable.”

The US push for the resolution came just two days after Israel rescued four hostages from central Gaza under heavy artillery fire.
Israel said it was open to the proposal but would not abandon the war’s central goal of destroying Hamas’ military and governing capabilities, which it considers vital to its security.
