‘Republicans Have Always Tried to Wrap Themselves in the Flag While They Denigrate It’

Following the newly surfaced video of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) acknowledging that she should have called for the National Guard to be deployed to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, the former House speaker declared on MSNBC’s “Deadline” on Monday that “former Republicans have always tried to wrap themselves around the flag while disrespecting it.”

Host Nicole Wallace asked, “If this campaign is going to be about something as big as the flag, then Trump supporters insulted it by flying it upside down on the day of the riot. An upside-down flag was also flown on Supreme Court Justice Alito’s property in Virginia. Journalist Vaughn Hilliard said this has led to flag-shaming campaigns across the country, flying the flag as a sign of distress to make a political statement, and portraying veterans as losers and idiots. General Kelly has been forced to publicly acknowledge and say it’s absolutely true. So if this campaign is going to be about the flag and whether the men and women who die for their country are losers and idiots, then what do you think this campaign is going to look and feel like to the American people?”

“Let’s just say that Republicans have tried to wrap themselves in the flag while still despising it. I’m originally from Baltimore, Maryland, where our national anthem was written. My favorite lyric in the anthem is, ‘We’ll walk the night proving that our flag is still there.’ This work that they’re doing is walking the night proving that our flag is still there and that there is liberty and justice for all. But we have to run our campaign around the issues that are discussed at the dinner table – access to jobs, health care, education and what that means for working American families. That’s how they’re going to make that decision,” Pelosi said.
