Hunter BidenBiden, President Joe Biden’s only surviving son, was convicted of three federal firearms-related charges.
On Tuesday morning, after just three hours of deliberations, the jury found Biden guilty of three felony counts. The first two charges involved making false statements on federal ATF forms, after Biden claimed he was not a drug addict and even signed the required paperwork when he purchased a firearm in October 2018.
The third charge concerns gun possession. Federal law prohibits drug addicts from purchasing or possessing guns. Biden purchased the gun on October 12, 2018, and his ex-girlfriend, Hallie Biden (the widow of Biden’s older brother Beau), dumped it 11 days later.
Biden now faces up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $750,000, but because this is his first offense, he is unlikely to receive the maximum sentence. Last week, President Biden vowed not to grant his son a pardon if he is convicted.
President Biden then avoided a criminal sentence altogether, releasing a statement that focused on Hunter’s struggle with drug addiction and recovery: “As I said last week, I am President, but I am also a father. Jill and I love our son and are so proud of the man he has become. Many families who have had a loved one struggle with drug addiction understand the sense of pride it can bring to see a loved one overcome addiction and show such strong and tenacious recovery.”
The Trump campaign also issued a statement wishing Hunter a speedy recovery and saying his conviction distracts from other crimes his family is alleged to have committed.
“This trial is nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the Biden crime family, who extorted tens of millions of dollars from China, Russia and Ukraine,” the campaign wrote. “Unscrupulous Joe Biden’s control of the Biden family criminal empire will come to an end on November 5th. Biden will never again sell access to government for personal gain. As for Hunter, we wish him the best in his recovery and legal proceedings.”
This is breaking news and will be updated as the situation develops.
