Rory McIlroy’s divorce shockingly called off ahead of U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2

Looks like Rory McIlroy won’t be getting divorced after all.

Prior to last month’s PGA Championship in Valhalla, the golf world was stunned by news that McIlroy had separated from his wife, Erica McIlroy, who filed for divorce in Florida on Monday, May 13, the day after winning the Wells Fargo Championship.

But he has since I had a change of heartAccording to a report from Parents.

“Over the last few weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future is to live together as a family,” McIlroy told British media.

“Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

He and his wife have been married for seven years and have a four-year-old daughter, Poppy.

But thankfully for his family, McIlroy voluntarily withdrew the divorce papers ahead of this week’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, where he is hoping to end a decade-long drought of major championship wins – he was runner-up to Wyndham Clark last year – and the news that his family is with him will no doubt be a relief to him.

It’s also worth noting that McIlroy flew in from his home in South Florida on Tuesday morning and chose to fly home after the Memorial Tournament late Sunday, which perhaps explains why he didn’t go directly from Muirfield Village to Pinehurst 2.

He also appeared in high spirits upon arrival as he addressed the media at 11:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday.

“It’s good to be back,” McIlroy said.

“I really enjoyed Pinehurst last time I was here in 2014. I’ve just arrived and am looking forward to seeing the golf course in the afternoon.”

In 2014, McIlroy finished tied for 23rd at Pinehurst Golf No. 2 as Martin Kaymer dominated the rest, before winning the British Open and PGA Championship that summer.

Still, this positive development will likely lead to an elusive fifth major championship. McIlroy said he feels “close” to winning, and he has come close on multiple occasions in recent years, including at the U.S. Open.
