An 84-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet just outside her home and was hospitalized Monday evening.
According to the New York Police Department, the victim, Althea Lawson, was shot in her left arm while sitting in a walker outside the Flatbush Gardens development at the intersection of Brooklyn Avenue and Foster Street at approximately 6:45 p.m.
The woman’s sister, Enid Lawson, said: Fox 5 New York It was “like a shock.”

“I can’t explain it, I feel sad,” she told the outlet.
Lawson told the outlet that none of her sister’s children had ever picked up a gun, and that something needed to be done about gun violence in the city.

“Your kids have to go to school. You send them to school, you pay for them, and then what do you do with them? Smoke cigarettes and use guns? Thank goodness I don’t have kids that use guns,” Lawson said.
Members of Elite Learnings, a nonprofit based in the development that is part of the city’s Violence Interdiction Network, believe the shooters knew they weren’t working on Monday, or else they would have been deterred.

“This is very unfortunate. A woman gets hurt on her day off. This is not what the community is about,” Elite Learners Supervisor Michael Warren said.

Althea Lawson is expected to survive and is currently being treated at Kings County Hospital. As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
