Gilgo Beach serial killer suspect Rex Heurman reportedly visited a Long Island gun club the day before one of his alleged victims, Jessica Taylor, disappeared and days before her body was found in nearby woods.
According to a Newsday report, excerpts from the diary revealed that Heurman had planned to participate in a rifle shooting class at the Peconic River Sportsmen’s Club in Manorville on July 20, 2003. A few days later, Taylor’s body parts were discovered about a mile from the edge of the gun club’s grounds on July 26, 2003.
Heuerman, who was charged with second-degree murder in Taylor’s death in an indictment unsealed Thursday, was associated with several “shooting clubs” in the area, a law enforcement source confirmed to Newsday.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges last week.
A spokesman for the Peconic River Sportsmen’s Club said Heuerman had attended “a few” public events in the early 2000s but had never been a member. Heuerman last visited the club in April 2010 for a shooting competition, according to club spokeswoman Kelly Goldberg.
“Mr. Heuerman was not and is not currently a member of the Peconic River Sportsmen’s Club,” Goldberg said, “although Mr. Heuerman has participated in several high-powered rifle competitions at the club that were open to the public.”
