Poll Reveals How Biden and Trump Voters Clash on Marriage, Abortion, and Gender

A new Pew Research Center poll finds sharp differences in opinion between voters who would vote for President Biden and former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election on issues including marriage, abortion, gender identity, same-sex marriage and the role of religion in the United States. When asked if they thought “society would be better if marriage and childbirth were prioritized,” 59% of Trump supporters answered “yes,” while only 19% of Biden supporters agreed. Meanwhile, 37% of Trump supporters said they “feel uncomfortable when a woman does not take her husband’s surname after marriage,” while only 13% of Biden supporters agreed.

Meanwhile, 22% of Trump supporters and 5% of Biden supporters see widespread access to contraception as “neither a good nor a bad thing,” and only 11% of Trump supporters think that greater access to contraception is a “bad thing.”

When it comes to gender identity, nearly all Trump supporters (90%) agreed that a person’s gender is “determined by the sex they were assigned at birth,” while 59% of Biden supporters agreed that “whether someone is male or female can be different from their gender.”

Additionally, 66% of Biden supporters said they were “comfortable” with people using gender-neutral pronouns such as “they” instead of “he” or “she,” while 20% of Trump supporters disagreed. When asked whether they thought it was a “good thing” that “more people than ever before are comfortable identifying as gay, lesbian, or bisexual,” 51% of Biden supporters answered in the affirmative.

Additionally, 35% of Biden supporters consider increasing LGBT awareness in the United States to be “neither good nor bad,” while the remaining 13% consider it to be “bad.” A majority of Trump supporters (53%) expressed opposition to increasing LGBT awareness, while 36% were neutral and 11% supported it.

Regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States, 57% of Biden supporters thought it would be “good” for society, 31% thought it was “neither good nor bad,” and 12% thought it was “bad.” In contrast, 51% of Trump supporters had a negative opinion of the legalization of same-sex marriage, 39% were neutral, and 11% supported it.

When asked if government policies should support religious values ​​and beliefs, Trump supporters (43%) and Biden supporters (13%) agreed. Similarly, 36% of Trump supporters agreed that the Bible should have a major influence on U.S. law, compared with 11% of Biden supporters.

Only a small percentage of both Biden supporters (6%) and Trump supporters (22%) support the federal government making Christianity the “official religion of the United States.” Meanwhile, more than half of Trump supporters (59%) believe the federal government should “promote Christian moral values,” compared with Biden supporters (22%). Additionally, 58% of Biden supporters expressed support for the idea that the federal government should not “promote Christian moral values,” compared with 17% of Trump supporters.

When asked whether they thought “belief in God is necessary to be moral and have good values,” 45% of Trump supporters answered affirmatively, while 20% of Biden supporters said the same.
