A Kentucky man who traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State (ISIS) discussed jihad, martyrdom and shooting up airplanes, a federal court heard.
according to press release Mirsad Hariz Adem Ramik, 34, who received funding from the Department of Justice, left the United States for Istanbul in 2014 with two co-conspirators.
The three quickly abandoned their planned trip and flew to Gaziantep, Turkey, near the Turkish-Syrian border.
They then joined ISIS, a US-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Mirsad Hariz Adem Ramik was found guilty of “providing material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), conspiring to provide material support to ISIS, and receiving military training from ISIS.” (Grayson County Jail)
According to the Department of Justice, Ramik attended an ISIS training camp where he received military-style training.
Ramic, a dual American-Bosnian citizen, joined an ISIS fighting unit made up of mostly Bosnian foreign fighters and took part in an ISIS attack on Kobani, Syria.

Authorities said Ramik’s social media accounts showed him wearing camouflage and standing in front of a truck equipped with an anti-aircraft gun and an ISIS flag.

According to the press release, Ramik and his co-conspirators also discussed “among other things the use of anti-aircraft weapons to shoot down the plane” and “jihad, martyrdom and fighting for ISIS.”

Ramik has been in federal custody since December 2021 after being deported from Turkey.
Ramick is scheduled to be sentenced on September 5th and faces a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison, a $750,000 fine and life on probation.
