Washington DC – Republican Senate candidate and MLB legend Steve Garvey says Californians are “fed up with” current statewide and national policies on inflation, crime and the border, and that it’s “time for a change” in California politics as he competes for a long-held Democratic seat.
Garvey defeated several Democratic candidates in the state’s jungle primary in March and is set to run for the California Senate in November to become the first Republican to serve in the state senate since 1992.
As he gave hitting tips to Republican lawmakers ahead of Wednesday’s annual Congressional Baseball Game, the former Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman told Fox News Digital that his campaign is gaining momentum.
“I’m very proud of the way California has moved forward. It’s a very narrow path,” Garvey said in an interview at Nationals Stadium. “I think we’ve run a very good race. We have a great team. We’ve got momentum.”

“Political courage is about standing up for what’s right and standing away from what’s not right. So I think it’s time to change this country, and it’s going to start in California,” Garvey told Fox News Digital after swing practice with Republican lawmakers.

A recent PODS report on moving trends for 2024 found that “California’s cost of living is about 50% higher than the national average,” with residents moving out of California due to rising prices.
“We’re calling for common sense, compassion and consensus. And especially in California, people are tired of the economy. They’re tired of crime on the streets. The border situation is just awful right now,” he said.
Garvey stressed that the border will be a key issue in 2024 as migrants continue to stream through California’s southern border port.
“We need to restore law and order to the border,” Garvey said, adding that he would be “vocal” in calling for more security amid a growing illegal immigration crisis. “It has a direct impact on the men and women of California.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who is running for the California Senate seat held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), has “let the people of California down.” Garvey said the Democratic congressman has “failed the people of California.”
