A California woman was reportedly arrested in 2023 in connection with the death of her 1-year-old child from fentanyl.
According to Chico police, Christy Scarborough, 40, was arrested on May 30 and charged with child abuse resulting in serious injury or death and child abuse resulting in death. Police say the toddler had access to the fentanyl “because it was left next to where she was sleeping,” Fox 40 reported. report Wednesday.

Officers responded to Enloe Hospital in Chico following the death of an infant on June 6, 2023. Upon arrival, officers learned the infant had been brought to the hospital by its mother, identified as Scarborough, according to the report.
According to the report, deputies from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and Chico Police Department searched Scarborough’s home and found fentanyl drug paraphernalia next to the child’s bed.

After interviewing family members and gathering more evidence, police ultimately determined the boy died from “acute fentanyl intoxication,” according to the report.
“Detectives obtained additional evidence indicating Scarborough had previously used fentanyl. “Following the infant’s death, police began a search,” Chico police said in a statement.
Scarborough was booked into the Butte County Jail, police said.
