Loved ones of retired LA County deputy missing in Greece baffled by disappearance: ‘We’ve got to find him’

The family of a semi-retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who went missing while vacationing in Greece is working frantically to find him.

Albert Carivet, 59, was last seen on June 11, heading out for a four-hour hike on the Greek island of Amorgos, a place he has visited regularly for years, where he had planned to meet friends later that day, friends and family told Fox News Digital from the Los Angeles suburb of Hermosa Beach.

“He goes to Greece at this time every year,” said Sandrine Cutright, Carivet’s sister-in-law. “He goes to Greece to unplug and hike, swim and just sleep and relax. He does it to get away from his busy life in Los Angeles as a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy.”

A few hours before Kalibet went missing, her friend Robin Winston Leon said she and her friend had packed their belongings in a car to move to a new hotel and planned to have lunch later. Kalibet arrived in Greece about two weeks ago. When she didn’t return from a hike, her friend reported her missing.

A veteran hiker, Kalibet has been to Amorgos every year since 2009. The hike is “tough,” but Kalibet has done it before, she said.

Her disappearance has puzzled her family, who speculate she may have fallen into a crevice or off a cliff.

“He is very healthy, very strong. If he had a heart attack, he would already be on the hunt and the police would have found him already,” Leon said. “Something has happened to our friend and the clock is ticking. We need to find him quickly.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the State Department about the search for Carivet.

Adding to the mystery is the fact that none of Calibet’s belongings have been recovered.

Ms Cutright’s husband, Oliver Carivet, Ms Carivet’s brother, arrived in Greece on Friday to help with the search, but she said the effort was progressing slowly and time was of the essence.

“It’s almost his third day here,” said his brother, Oliver Carivet. Fox 11 In Los Angeles. “There’s no water… It’s very confusing.”

Amorgos is a remote island with a population of fewer than 2,000 people, Leon said.

“We’re 30 miles away from the nearest airport, the Greek island of Santorini,” she said. “We can’t get the resources there to do a search.”

According to the Telegraph, Caribet’s disappearance came at a time when the island had issued a “severe heat warning” and the extreme heat was expected to continue until June 13th.

The incident also came just days after popular British TV presenter Michael Mosley was found dead in Greece on June 9 after going on a hike on June 5. Eleftherios Papakalodoukas, mayor of Symi island, where Mosley went missing, said his body was found lying face-up against a fence and was believed to have fallen down a steep slope.

Kalibet’s friends and family are calling on anyone with drones, flashlights or other supplies to help Greek authorities with the search.

“We need to find Albert because we don’t want to live without him,” Cutright said.
