Teen Shot as Multiple Fights Broke Out on Long Island Beach

More than 2,000 New York high school students gathered in Long Beach on Thursday for “Senior Sup Day,” leaving one person shot, several fights and teenagers dancing on top of a police car, according to local reports.

A large group of high school seniors gathered at a Nassau County beach, and by 6 p.m. the gathering had descended into chaos. New York Post report.

“A fun day ends with someone getting shot,” an NBC News reporter said at the scene.

Police said that while officers were clearing unruly youths from the beach, fights broke out and at least one juvenile was shot and injured.

Long Beach police were forced to call in reinforcements from Nassau County police to disperse the crowds.

“There were a lot of people in the street, people being trampled,” said Rowan Campbell, a teenager from Long Island. “I was really worried.”

“We must do everything in our power to work with the government, the police and community leaders,” community activist James Hodge told NBC, adding that gun violence was “unacceptable.”

Video of the chaotic event before the children were dispersed showed several people dancing on the hood of a police car and another group of young people occupying lifeguard chairs on the beach.

Police recovered a gun from the scene. The condition of the shooting victim is currently unknown.
