Reportedly CBS NewsThe Biden administration is preparing to announce a plan to grant legal status to hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who have been in the U.S. for at least 10 years. The announcement comes amid mounting evidence that Biden’s handling of illegal immigration is a major hurdle to his 2024 reelection chances.
The CBS report was based on conversations with four unnamed Biden administration officials who discussed the details in an apparent test run with friendly media. The unnamed officials said the program, called “Parole in Place,” would offer green cards and deportation protections to undocumented immigrants who have been in the U.S. for 10 years and married U.S. citizens.
Under current law, these people may already be eligible for green cards but would first have to leave the country to apply. The Biden administration’s program would remove even that requirement, allowing these individuals to become eligible immediately.
The administration officials, who were not named, also suggested the Biden administration plans to streamline the process for so-called DREAMers to apply for controversial visas such as the H-1B visa.
The administration is expected to announce the measures as early as Tuesday. Administration officials estimate that up to 1.1 million undocumented immigrants would be affected by the new policy.
Biden’s move comes as he finds himself caught in the middle on immigration. Many poll have display Americans at large have grown increasingly frustrated with the surge in migrants at the border since border officials led by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott launched a controversial busing program designed to help so-called sanctuary jurisdictions share the burden of caring for the migrants they claim to welcome.
But Biden faces a major challenge from the left wing of his base. I was furious at him. Biden has been criticized for not doing enough to support Hamas terrorists, and he also faced some backlash from his own party over a recent, largely ineffectual executive order he issued to stem a flood of so-called asylum seekers at the border.
