NYC’s dollar pizza slice is back —here’s where you can find the bargain

Then again, four quarters can buy you a little slice of heaven.

The beloved dollar pizza may be a nostalgic relic of recent years, but at least one pizzeria owner is doing his best to offer his customers a better deal.

Since last spring, Sana Ullah’s two East Village stores, BD Star Pizza and 99 Cent Pizza, have started selling pizza slices for $1 again, after charging customers $1.50 each.

“I think $1 a slice is reasonable,” Ullah told The Post. “For a lot of people, it’s the same thing. [are] I’m struggling. Yes, I can sell more. [slices]but also to help people.

Customers are happy to save money.

“I had to rub my eyes for a second,” said Chris Hines, who spotted Ullah’s 99 Cent Pizza sign from two blocks away. “No place sells a dollar slice anymore,” so “it’s nice to see it coming back in this day and age when everyone’s paying more for everything.”

Frank Santangelo, 37, also said he was happy to see Dollar Slice making a real comeback.

“It’s finally happening,” said Santangelo, who lives nearby. “New York City just doesn’t feel the same without the quintessential dollar slice.”

Like other stores in the city, Ullah was forced to raise the price of a cheese slice to $1.50 in 2022 due to rising production costs caused by skyrocketing inflation.

“Everything has gone up in price,” Ullah said. “Cheese, flour, napkins, dough.”

Last year, he tried to sell $1 slices again at his 99 Cent Pizza shop on East 14th Street, only to raise the price by half a dollar within a few months.

After realizing that many regulars seemed unwilling to pay the extra 50 cents, Ullah reverted back to selling $1 slices about four months ago, but sales only increased slightly.

“If you help someone, someone will help you,” he said.

Ullah said there are usually lines outside BD Star Pizza on Avenue A near Sixth Avenue and 99 Cent Pizza on East 14th Street between Second and Third Avenues on Friday and Saturday nights.

“There’s nothing better to soak up some alcohol than a dollar slice,” Hines said.

Pizza lover Gina Benicasa, 44, gave the BD Star pizza a “five out of 10” and said it had a bit too much cheese for her taste.

“But I don’t have high expectations for a $1 slice,” she said.
