An Oakland, California man was arrested Monday in connection with the arson of a University of California Police Department (UCPD) vehicle and several other incidents.
Officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said 34-year-old Casey Robert Goonan was arrested “in connection with the arson of a University of California, Berkeley Police vehicle” and was reportedly linked to three other arson-related incidents on the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) campus. Goonan reportedly faces multiple felony charges, along with “possession and use of a destructive device and multiple counts of arson,” authorities said.
In early June, an unknown author Published A post to Abolition Media admitting responsibility for placing an “incendiary device” under a “University of California, Berkeley police vehicle.”
“The device was illuminated under the left rear wheel of the police SUV and was placed between the tire and the underside of the fuel tank,” the anonymous poster wrote, adding that the “act was done in retaliation against the UC Police Department.”
The author added that the act was taken “in solidarity with students attacked by a fascist police state at UC Santa Cruz” and “in solidarity with the attacks on students by Zionist street collaborators at UC Los Angeles.”
Another anonymous user, who goes by the name “Student Intifada,” wrote: I have written On June 13, the San Francisco Bay Area Independent Media Center posted a statement on their website claiming they had set fire to “the side of a building” on the UCB campus. The building that was set on fire was Coshland Hall.
“I don’t even know what building it was,” wrote the anonymous poster. “Honestly, I don’t care. Every building on the UC Berkeley campus should be burned down given how the UC system has treated student protesters. Last night they attacked a young female student who was expressing her opinion through a megaphone, so we dropped a Molotov cocktail on the side of a campus building. The flames were huge and spread to the trees and bushes on the side of the building.”
The outlet noted that another post on the San Francisco Bay Area Independent Media Center website on June 16 said a “supply building” had been looted and arson had broken out at a “construction site.”
Another anonymous statement from IndyBay on Sunday said there had been further incidents, including “the successful looting of thousands of dollars’ worth of material from UCB’s supply building,” “the experimental burning of a dry grass hillside inside the campus,” and “arson at a construction site (mainly construction materials, wooden pallets and large areas of dry shrubland).”

Goonan is currently being held at Santa Rita Jail with bail set at $1 million, the outlet reported. Records show Goonan is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.
