Virginia Senator Suhas Subrahmanyam (D) has won the hotly contested Democratic race to replace retiring Representative Jennifer Wexton (D), according to Decision Desk HQ.
Subrahmanyam defeated 11 other candidates to win the Democratic nomination for Virginia’s 10th congressional district. Wexton announced last year that she would not seek reelection after her health diagnosis was changed to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
Subrahmanyam was one of the candidates’ best fundraisers, raising more than $1 million, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, and he received Wexton’s endorsement in the primary.
a Report from the Virginia Mercury He noted last month that some of Subrahmanyam’s campaign staff worked for the state senator in his official capacity, but federal campaign finance reports did not list the reported compensation of some of those staff members.
The campaign told a Virginia news outlet that its campaign manager’s consulting firm had received the money that was meant to be used to pay some staff members, and the campaign said it was following federal election laws.
President Biden won the district by 18 points in 2020.
