Brown University is offering a week-long summer course called “The Politics of Obesity” aimed at teaching freshman students about “fat phobia” in modern society.
University Offers The college prep course for freshman students explores theoretical scenarios that view obesity through a feminist gender and race lens. The course is an introduction to an emerging academic approach that teaches students to think critically about fat phobia in society. Field “Fat Research”.
Brown’s college prep program is designed to give high school students a taste of college life through academics and activities. according to See the university’s website The week-long course, which runs from July 8 to July 12, asks students to “think critically about different perspectives on the stigma of obesity in contemporary society” and “understand and discuss the social, medical and cultural impacts of obesity.”

“While thousands of nutritionists and even the CDC continue to speak of the so-called ‘obesity epidemic,’ recent sociological publications have drawn attention for detailing the racial origins of obesity phobia and denouncing the anti-obesity sentiment of many in authority,” the course description reads. Instructor Victoria Ronald said, courseThe course, titled “Women and Leadership,” will teach concepts of gender, feminism, intersectionality and inclusive leadership.
The university offered similar courses. title “Diet Culture and Obesity Phobia in Modern America” was offered as an elective in American History in the spring of 2021. Recently, the university offered The course was called “Fat, Dirty, and Slow: Unregulated Associations in American Capitalism.”
Universities across the country are offering course studies on “obesity.” Cornell University offered a freshman seminar last fall called “Have You Eat? QTBIPOC Care,” which examined how queer, trans, Black, and Indigenous people of color receive and experience care through food. Princeton University previously offered a similar course called “Obesity: The F-Word and Public Institutions.”
