American Regan Smith smashes world record in women’s 100-meter backstroke at US Olympic swimming trials

Team USA has already Summer Olympics.

Three-time Olympic medallist Regan Smith will compete in her second Olympic Games next month after a commanding victory in the women’s 100-meter backstroke. U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials Tuesday night in Indianapolis.

But she will emerge with well-earned bragging rights.

The 22-year-old Smith touched the wall in 57.13 seconds to break the world record and take the win. In the semifinals the night before, Smith had broken his own American record of 57.47 seconds.

“It all went according to plan,” Smith said after the race. “I’m really proud of myself. Backstroke is hard at times, but to be able to fight back and get it back means a lot.”

Smith won easily. Kayleigh McKeon from Australia 57.33 recorded last year.

In her first Olympic Games in Tokyo, the former Stanford University swimmer won a bronze medal in the women’s 100 meters and a silver medal in the women’s 200 meter butterfly. She also won a silver medal in the women’s 4 x 100 meter relay.

For the Minnesota native, this follows a breakout year in which she set a world record in the 100m backstroke at the 2019 World Championships as a 17-year-old.

“This has been incredibly rewarding,” Smith said Tuesday. “When I was a teenager, there wasn’t much going on. There was no pressure. I was always the youngest. Nobody expected much from me. I was able to go at it without fear.”
