The Los Angeles Sparks announced that No. 2 overall pick Cameron Brink suffered a torn left anterior cruciate ligament during Tuesday night’s game against the Connecticut Sun.
Sparks said more details would be announced at a later date, but a torn ACL in any sport typically means a season-ending injury due to the lengthy recovery period.
That’s a terrible result for Brink, a Stanford native who fell one spot after the Indiana Fever selected Caitlin Clark with the No. 1 overall pick.

Brink began her professional career with the Sparks, starting all 15 games of the WNBA season and averaging 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.
The injury makes it even more unfortunate because Brink was scheduled to represent the United States on the 3×3 team at the Paris Olympics.

The injury occurred during the first quarter against the Suns during a transition offensive play when Brink received a pass at the top of the key and drove to the basket, but as he attempted to dribble with his left hand, he fell awkwardly to the floor and immediately felt pain.
Brink was helped to his feet by Sparks teammates, but was unable to put weight on his left leg and limped to the bench before being helped back to the locker room by staff members.

Video replays showed Brink’s left foot got stuck as he stepped forward in anticipation of contact with a Suns defender.
However, it was not the defender who caused the injury, sparking speculation that the injury may be serious.
