Rickwood was also the home of the Birmingham Black Barons, the team Mays played for in the Negro Leagues in 1948. At the time of Mays’ death, MLB was already planning to honor Negro League players at the stadium, so the league decided to combine both memorials.

“Today, everyone across Major League Baseball mourns this loss. We are gathered in the very stadium where an unparalleled career and legend began,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said.

“Willie Mays took his versatile talents from the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League to the historic Giants franchise. From the East Coast in New York and San Francisco to the West Coast, Willie inspired generations of players and fans as baseball grew and truly earned its status as the national pastime.”

According to TMZ Sports, “The game at Rickwood Field will be broadcast nationally on FOX.”
