Speaking on Fox News Channel’s “Fox and Friends” on Wednesday, NYPD Sergeant John Chell said dealing with crimes committed by immigrants is “difficult because you don’t know who they are” and that “this is new for us.”
“How hard is it to police a community where you don’t know their record? You have no idea where they’re coming from. The majority of them are law-abiding citizens,” co-host Lawrence Jones said. [is] How bad is it to be a nuisance while riding a moped?
“It’s new for us,” Chell replied. “In the last two years, the city has welcomed more than 200,000 immigrants. Many of them are here in search of the American dream. But only a small percentage [is] He came here to commit crimes against our city. Robbery, chain robbery, shot two police officers three weeks ago. Shooting at us in Times Square, assaulting us in Times Square. This is the first time we’ve done this. It’s hard because we don’t know who we’re dealing with. So we’re kind of learning as we go. Every time we make an arrest, we don’t say, is he an immigrant? But in the big cases, we’re seeing it. I’ll give you some stats that are pretty astounding. They’re committing crimes on mopeds and getting away on mopeds. [have] “In the last two years, we’ve seen about a 200% increase in the number of mopeds. This is a big deal for us. We’ve never dealt with this before. But our police department has been working really hard. We’ve taken about 41,000 mopeds off the streets. We’ve arrested some gang members who are committing robberies and chain robberies. The officer who was shot last week, a couple weeks ago, did a great job. But this is a first for the city, this is a first for us.”
He said police had been “record-breaking” and crime was falling, but not as quickly as hoped, adding: “This tells you about repeat offenders, about people who commit crimes repeatedly.”
