Fifteen-year-old Charlie Woods placed first in the qualifying round for the U.S. Junior Amateur at Eagle Trace Golf Club, earning his first opportunity to play in a United States Golf Association tournament.

Woods finished 1 under par at the Coral Springs, Fla., course, but that came after a tough start to the round, when he bogeyed and double bogeyed his first two holes.

But Woods bounced back and recorded five birdies to take the victory.

“I didn’t play well the first two holes, but I played really well the last 16,” Woods said. “I just told myself not to take any more bogeys or doubles, and when I had birdie opportunities, I took advantage of them.”

The U.S. Open had just concluded at the No. 2 venue, Pinehurst, and Woods’ younger brother was there to support his father at the tournament, but also tried out to compete himself.

Woods shot nine over par in the U.S. Open qualifying round at Legacy Golf and Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, placing him 61st out of 71 golfers.

So, although they competed in the event as a team, Woods was not able to play against his father at Pinehurst.

But Woods has a chance to follow in his father’s career footsteps: He won the U.S. Junior Amateur in 1991 at age 15, the same age as his son.

“I’d like to win a U.S. Golf Association championship and hopefully win the U.S. Open one day,” Woods said.

First, he must take on a large Junior Amateur field at Michigan’s Oakland Hills Country Club, featuring 264 young golfers all hoping for glory.
