‘Republicans, beware’: Dem super PAC bankrolled by dark money group meddles in key GOP primary

A Democratic super PAC that has received more than $500,000 in cash from left-wing dark-finance nonprofits has interfered in Colorado’s Republican congressional primary, the latest instance of Democrats meddling in a Republican primary.

Rocky Mountain Values PAC, which is funded by the left-leaning dark money nonprofit Sixteen Thirty Fund, has spent at least $300,000 to boost former Republican state Rep. Ron Hanks by attacking him as too conservative and tying him to former President Trump. Hanks is running in a six-way primary in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, a race abandoned by Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

The funding appears to come as Democrats calculate that Hanks has a lower chance of beating Democrat Adam Frisch than Republican Jeff Hurd. According to a poll is the front-runner. The Sixteen Thirty Fund donated $500,000 to Rocky Mountain Values PAC in April and gave more than $4,500 earlier this month.

Frisch lost to Boebert in 2022 by just 546 votes in a district where Trump is popular.

“To the surprise of no one, Adam and the Democrats are attacking Jeff because they know he is the only Republican who can beat Frisch and keep the seat Republican,” Hurd’s campaign said in a statement to The Colorado Sun earlier this month.

“Voters in western and southern Colorado will not be fooled.”

The Republican-leaning Congressional Leadership Fund responded by spending about $400,000 on ads attacking Hanks’ record on issues such as gun control and accusing him of not being in line with President Trump’s policies.

Frisch has also been spending money to attack Hurd in the primary. The Colorado Sun reported.

“Why are major Democratic donors spending so much money supporting Ron Hanks’ campaign?” CLF spokesperson Courtney Parella told Fox News Digital.

“Republicans, beware.”

“Adam Frisch’s dirty political tactics show that playing dirty doesn’t get you a win,” NRCC spokeswoman Delaney Boemer said in a statement. “Republicans must come together and condemn the Democrats’ egregious meddling in the primary election because Republicans should choose their party’s candidate, not Democrats.”

While left-wing groups have often interfered in Republican primaries in recent years, Democrats’ strategy is to portray candidates they perceive as weak in the primaries as “too conservative” in order to give them an advantage, thereby providing them an easier challenger in November’s presidential election.

In 2022, The Democratic Party More than $40 million was poured into supporting six pro-Trump candidates in the Republican primary, but all six of those Republicans lost to Democrats in the general election.

But many political experts see the strategy as dangerous, and DCCC chair Rep. Suzan DelBene told The Washington Post in January that the group no longer supports the strategy of backing “far-right” candidates in battleground districts.

Fox News Digital reached out to Hurd’s campaign, Hanks’ campaign and the Sixteen Thirty Fund but did not receive a response.

“RMV PAC is committed to defeating radical Republicans in Colorado,” Amber Miller, a spokesperson for Rocky Mountain Values PAC, told The Colorado Sun.
