Maine poised build ‘affordable’ LGBTQ senior housing complex

A Portland-based group is working with state-run organizations and funds to build “affordable” housing for low-income LGBTQ+ seniors in Maine.

But wait, isn’t that discrimination based on sexual orientation and therefore illegal?

Technically, “the center will be open to the entire community,” said Chris O’Connor, executive director of Equality Community Center and one of the people overseeing the project.

But listening to developers talk about the project, it’s clear that all of the marketing revolves around the LGBTQ+ community.

“I think it’s important to be a part of the community,” said Ed Gardener, one of the founders of ECC and who donated the land for the complex. that It’s a community that has helped me grow and thrive in Portland.”

“This month we will be participating in Pride festivals across southern Maine to specifically promote the fact that this housing project is coming to fruition,” O’Connor said.

Complex Interest Form It is aimed at the LGBTQ+ community.

Pat Gray is disgusted (but not surprised) that “the government is engaging in this discrimination.”

“How is that legal?” he asks, “when you’re building a government-funded complex just for members of the gay community.”

The ruling states that “discrimination can be made on the basis of sexual orientation, but it must be against the sexual orientation of the majority.”
