In the 18 T20Is that have been played at the venue, 11 have been won by the team batting first. Not sure that narrow gap points to being the deciding factor today, but one that can’t hurt for Bangladesh as they look to beat Australia for the first time ever in an ICC event.

Australia captain Mitch Marsh has hardly held back on his view that, as far as he’s concerned, the tournament essentially starts now.

Even with that in mind, Australia have fine-tuned as well as could be hoped for through the group stage with comfortable victories over Oman and England, a thumping win over Namibia, then admittedly a scare in a relatively dead rubber against Scotland.

Important Events
Wickets! Bangladesh 0-1 (Tanjid B. Starc 0)
Mitchell Starc bowled an awkward length and Tanjid Hasan was unsure whether to bat forward or backward. The Bangladesh opener opted to bat backward but that proved to be a mistake as the ball smashed into the stumps.
The match was briefly halted due to rain, but was followed by the playing of the Bangladesh national anthem, which drew the attention of Showbizgul.
“Don’t get me wrong, I love the Bangladesh national anthem. But was that an extended version for the special edition of Collector’s Records? Either way, it was absolutely amazing.”
“But is this the longest national anthem?”
Something to think about over the next few hours, but for now, Mitchell Starc is throwing the new ball with both hands. Game Start!
Bangladesh XI
Tanjid Hasan, Litton Das (wicket-keeper), Najmul Hossain Shanto (captain), Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Tanjim Shakib, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman.
A change for Bangladesh Mahedi Hasan will replace Jaquel Ali in the starting line-up.
Australia XI
David Warner, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh (captain), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade (Weekend), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.
Australia is rooting for the Star Past Trio Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have been brought into the XI in place of Nathan Ellis and Ashton Agar to get the job done on what is expected to be a spin-heavy deck.
Australia won the toss and chose to field.
Mitch Marsh makes the right call, Australia bats first At the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
Of the 18 T20Is played at this venue, 11 have been won by the team batting first and while it remains to be seen whether that narrow margin will be the deciding factor in today’s match, it will certainly not be a detriment to Bangladesh as they look to beat Australia for the first time in an ICC tournament.
“The wicket doesn’t look too bad and I don’t think it will change much in 40 overs,” Marsh said after winning the toss.
“It’s good to be getting a bit more used to the conditions. I’ve only played one match here. As you get deeper and deeper into tournament play and the pressure builds up, it’s important to be true to yourself.”
Najmul Hossain Shanto says Bangladesh would have also bowled first but now it is their batting line-up’s turn to score a competitive total.
“In the Super Eights we need to do something special as a batting line-up,” Najmul Hossain Shanto said. “It looks like it’s going to be a good wicket.
The cover came off And Mitch Marsh and Najmul Hossain Shanto are out in the centre, waiting to hear the toss and team news.

It started to rain The captains were about to step out to the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium for the toss.
Ricky Ponting is braving the elements in the middle of the pitch without an umbrella as the Australian team continues to warm up, so hopefully we’re not too far away.
Form Guide
While Australia went through the group stage unbeaten, Bangladesh also started well with a tense two-wicket win over arch rivals Sri Lanka, a narrow defeat to South Africa and then convincing wins over the Netherlands and Nepal.
Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team have staged a rapid and somewhat surprising comeback since their 2-1 loss to the USA in last month’s T20 series in Houston, but their captain deserves a few more runs after managing just 26 in four matches in the tournament.
If Najmul misses out again, it is unclear which Bangladesh batsman will be promoted as no batsman has yet scored a century in the tournament – the closest is Tawhid Hridoy with 95 runs, but this was at a strike rate of 125, the top score by a Bangladesh batsman.
Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis (156), Travis Head (148) and David Warner (116) have all combined for triple-figure scores in their four group-stage matches, and despite Australia’s disappointing middle-order so far, their explosive top order looms as a key weapon today.
Australia has won all five times they have faced Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup, including one match en route to the title in 2021. The Asian nation at least won the bilateral T20 series 4-1 in Mirpur a few months before Australia’s triumph in Dubai, but the stakes are much higher here.
Jeff Lemon loves the Australian gameand the relatively early notion emerged that they were the team to beat again.
preamble
Hello and welcome to OBO’s live coverage of Australia vs Bangladesh as they kick off their Super Eight campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Australia captain Mitch Marsh has made little secret of his view that for him the tournament essentially begins now.
Even taking that into account, Australia performed as expected in the group stage, with comfortable wins over Oman and England, a big win over Namibia and then a scare in a relatively unfavourable match against Scotland.
After losing to Scotland, Australia may have been struggling more than they realised with the thought of beating their mutual rivals England, whose arch rivals showed signs of returning to their best with an eight-wicket win over the West Indies yesterday.
But the bigger picture is India’s victory over Afghanistan earlier today. The top two teams in the Super Eight group, which also includes Australia, Bangladesh, India and Afghanistan, will advance to the semi-finals as Marsh’s India aim to complete their ICC Trophy quest across Test matches, ODIs and T20 matches.
The match will kick off at 8.30pm (10.30am AEST, 1.30am BST) at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
The toss and team news will be published shortly, in the meantime, please email us your comments or contact us at X Martin Pagan Day or night.
