SCOTUS Votes 8-1 To Uphold Domestic Violence Gun Ban

The US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) on Friday upheld a federal ban on gun ownership for those subject to domestic violence restraining orders.

The case involved Zacky Rahimi, who was prohibited from possessing a gun under a 1994 law that prohibited people subject to the aforementioned restraining orders from possessing a gun.

CNN Quote Chief Justice John Roberts said he and his seven colleagues were “comfortably” in agreement on the decision.

“Our nation’s tradition of firearms control allows the government to take away weapons from individuals who pose a credible threat to the physical safety of others,” Roberts wrote in the majority opinion.

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the lone dissenting opinion in the decision.

“The Court and the Government have not cited a single historic law that has stripped people of their Second Amendment rights because of the potential for interpersonal violence. But by allowing the government to regulate one group in society, today’s decision puts Second Amendment rights at risk for many more people,” Thomas wrote.
