Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona is running a Copa America-themed ad for his senatorial run as the continental soccer tournament gets underway in the United States.
This is Gallego’s sixth television ad and its first in Spanish.Campeon” highlights his background as the son of immigrants, a Harvard graduate, and a Marine Corps veteran.
Originally a continental tournament open only to South American teams, the Copa America will be held in the United States for only the second time, with teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean also taking part.
The Mexican national team is the most popular soccer team in the United States with more than 60 million fans and is expected to draw a large Hispanic crowd when it makes its debut against Jamaica on Saturday.
Mexico will host Ecuador in the group stage on June 30 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
“As a kid, I remember watching soccer games with my cousins and rooting for superstars like Carlos Valderrama and Hugo Sanchez,” Gallego said, referring to Colombia and Mexico’s greatest players of all time.
“As the Copa America kicks off this week, communities across Arizona will see this ad and know I will be fighting for the issues that matter most to them, including reducing costs, protecting abortion rights and providing real solutions to the border crisis.”
Like Gallego, other campaigns are also focusing on continental conventions to appeal to Latinos.
The Biden-Harris campaign is running a Spanish-language Copa America ad titled,Goal!!!“Argentina wins 2-0!” fans chanted Thursday before Argentina’s opening match against Canada.
In Florida, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) has launched his own “Ghoul” We did a six-figure advertising buy on TV and digital.
The U.S. opens the tournament against Bolivia on Sunday. The tournament will conclude with the final on July 14 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
