Legendary quarterback turned announcer Joe Theismann has some advice for Tom Brady as he looks forward to his first season behind the microphone.

NFL fans are excited to hear Brady in the Fox Sports booth this season, and Theismann, who was part of the ESPN Sunday Night Football broadcast team from 1988-2005, knows the New England Patriots legend as one of the brightest minds in the history of the sport.

But Theismann knows it will take time to get used to the booth.

“Tom is extremely knowledgeable about the game of football, but there are a lot of knowledgeable former players who didn’t make it in broadcasting,” Theismann said. He told OutKick“But it all depends on how Tom phrases it, how he works with his broadcast partners and what he feels comfortable with.”

Theismann credits the great John Madden, who mentored him when he first got into broadcasting.

So, what’s your advice for Brady?

Tom Brady’s quarterback philosophy: “I want to see the best players touch the ball early”

“Be Tom Brady. Don’t try to be anybody else,” Theismann said. “To me, that’s probably the biggest and best advice: Be the guy that everybody knows knows football. Be the guy that knows the game. And let the game tell the story. You can embellish it a little bit, but the game tells the story, you don’t tell the story.”

Brady has already wowed fans with his candid comments on the Fox Sports show “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, in which he talked about what he liked to do every time he took to the field: getting the ball to his best player early.

In the clip, he explained how it’s hard for perimeter receivers to get the ball if a good defense knows the scheme, which he said is why Wes Welker, Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski thrived in their careers because there are more route options in the middle of the field.

But he used the example of the San Francisco 49ers offensive line’s talented players Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle to explain what he would like to do as a quarterback to help them all get into a rhythm early on.

The conversation was real and thoughtful, and for most fans it was a glimpse into what might be going on inside Brady’s great quarterback mind entering the 2024 season.

But Theismann knows there may be skeptics and, more importantly, bitter fans who despise Brady, who played for the Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his playing days.

Either way, Theismann is urging fans to be patient as he gets to work with Kevin Burkhart in the booth.

“Fans, please don’t be so quick to judge him,” Theismann said, “give him a chance to settle in, give him a chance to gain experience, give him a chance to understand and learn the broadcasting world just like he did in football.”
