Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) on Sunday suggested the race between President Biden and former President Trump will be a “close race” and expressed optimism about a Democratic victory.
When asked a question News Nation With Minnesota now considered a battleground state, Walz said, “Look, I know this was always going to be a tough fight,” according to The Hill Sunday.
“Minnesota, as you know, is a Great Plains state. It’s an agricultural state, it’s a mix of urban and rural, and I think it’s a microcosm of America. I think it’s going to be a close race, as our viewers know,” Walz continued. “The good news is we know how to win elections. We’ve been winning presidential elections in Minnesota for longer than any other state, going back to 1972.”
Waltz’s statement: Distributed reports The Trump campaign is trying to secure leases for eight offices for “Trump Force 47” in traditionally Democratic Minnesota, where Mr. Trump has repeatedly insisted he can win and made a campaign stop in the North Star State last month, speaking at a fundraising dinner.
Minnesota is the U.S. state that has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate the longest, last voting for Republican candidate, former President Nixon, in 1972.
Decision Desk HQ currently gives Biden a 66% chance of winning Minnesota in November. Biden won the state by 7% in 2020, a significant increase from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s narrow 1.5% margin of victory over Trump in 2016.
“We’re on the ground, and I think Joe Biden has been successful here,” Waltz said. “When Joe comes here, he delivers jobs and infrastructure projects, whereas the former president comes here and complains.”
“If you want to be a swing state, you have to offer something to voters, [Trump’s] “It’s going to be a close race because he’s just saying he’s going to win, but he’s going to beat her for the president,” Walz said.
