Police Remove Last UC Pro-Palestinian ‘Encampment’ at UC Santa Barbara

Police dismantled a pro-Palestinian “camp site” at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) between Saturday night and Sunday morning, making five arrests, local media reported.

In a statement report According to a local news channel, university officials said:

On Sunday morning, following repeated messages from university officials that camping was illegal and a violation of campus rules, police cleared the scene and the campus removed the numerous tents that remained.

The few people who remained at the scene Sunday morning had received multiple warnings to leave the area both before and during the tent removal.

Most protesters complied, but five refused to disperse and were detained by police. Once the tents were removed, the university resumed normal operations.

Student newspaper, Daily Nexus, report:

On June 23, more than 75 officers cleared the UCSB Liberation Zone camp and arrested six people, according to camp reports and police radio traffic. The camp, which opened on May 1 in solidarity with pro-Palestinian university camps across the country, is the last remaining UC camp and has been in existence for 54 days.

Both sides accused each other of negotiating in bad faith.

Between April and June, several “encampments” emerged on University of California campuses. Some were peacefully dispersed, but others, such as at UCLA, were cleared by police.

Jewish students reported being threatened, banned from public places, and even targeted on several University of California campuses.
