Cavs agree to hire Kenny Atkinson as head coach: reports

The Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly agreed to hire Kenny Atkinson as their next head coach on Monday.

Atkinson spent the past three years as an assistant coach under Steve Kerr with the Golden State Warriors and also served as an assistant coach under Ty Lue with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Atkinson served as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 until the middle of the 2019-20 season. He was fired by the Nets before the pandemic shut down the sports world and was replaced by Jacque Vaughn on an interim basis, but was ultimately replaced by Steve Nash.

He had a 118-190 record as the Nets’ head coach. The Cavaliers and Atkinson are expected to sign a contract in the near future. ESPN reported..

He will succeed J.B. Bickerstaff, who served as the team’s head coach from the 2019-20 season through the 2023-24 season and led the Cavaliers to the playoffs twice, but the team failed to reach the Eastern Conference finals.

Cleveland finished fourth in the conference last season with a 48-34 record.

The Cavaliers also have some big decisions to make this offseason regarding their top players, with Donovan Mitchell’s contract extension appearing to be at the top of the list. He’s due to make $35.4 million this season but could opt out of his contract before the start of the 2025-26 season.
